The Cosmos
Episode 6
By Peter TM
Thousands of Dreadnought Crews roamed the Stars in search of intelligent life and technology, with data sent back to the repository of any discoveries of life, or no life found. All this was collected and stored for future reference to future explorer crews, documenting new life's appearance or decline. One Sub-Repository was built where the Ancients had been discovered, the cavern widened to five times its original size, more than enough for a small community of caretakers to live. All Tours of Duty lasting one year then rotated home for three months leave. Frequent transport ships bring the resources needed to keep crews and teams alive, with the transportation of the waste to waiting Recycle Platforms dotted around the Sol System for disposal or recycling.
Just one Light Year away a new Guardian Facility was taking shape to house the Guardians, Crews, and support teams, planned since the Council accepted the Mantle, Guardians of the Galaxy. With more plans to create Bases and Sub-Repositories throughout the Universe, plotting locations of every lifeform that exists and those where possible, who have gone extinct, a huge task that would last for millennia. Science exploration with plans for strategically built Space Stations between key Galaxies of importance to the Union,, and Giant Space Docking facilities for creation and repair.
“Ancient Elders, when you feel up to it, we will assign a Starship for you to hopefully find your people wherever they are,” Hanna informed the Elders. “We also ask you to share any information you may have on any species you have come across during your travels, including those who are extinct.”
Stepping forward, Quillin told Hanna, “This Crystal holds what you asked for.” Passing the Crystal to Hanna who then placed it on a pedestal.
“Thank you Elder, Hal, make a copy of the data on this Crystal and send it to Athena please.”
“Understood Councillor, working,” then a few seconds later, “Transferring data…. Completed.”
“That was fast,” commented Quillin in surprise.
“We have another gift for all our Elders, we hope you accept,” Hanna said with hope in her voice.
“We offer you the choice to join us, our Union, to become the Exalted High Council of Elders to this Council, sharing your experiences, your knowledge, your wisdom as a teaching tool.”
Continuing Hanna spoke again. “By allowing us to uplift you with our own energy, you become one of us, one of the building blocks of our foundation.”
Sitting, the Council joined with their collective Union minds and spoke.
“DO YOU ACCEPT OUR GIFT?” Instantly sitting, the Precursor Elders sat on the gleaming marble floor, while the Ancients sat one by one. With just one position not filled, Ra’Ani looked for Nala, spotting her standing in the doorway.
“ELDER NALA, PLEASE ACCEPT OUR GIFT AND JOIN US.” Nala in surprise looked at Haydrienne for guidance, Haydrienne then motioned for Nala to join them. Saying nothing she sat beside Elder Viscillus.
“INITIALIZING TRANSFER” A beam of light shining from Hal onto the Councillors initiated the connection with the Elders.
“TRANSFER HAS COMMENCED.” The energy transfer had an immediate affect on the Elders, all senses slowly enhanced as they sat, shocking them all, their minds explored, awakening new paths to knowledge and technology beyond their current level of understanding. Their physical body's transformative change to the incoming energy adaptation casting years from their physical features, younger looking Elders.
After 20 minutes of uplift, the transfer was complete.
“TRANSFER COMPLETE,” Hanna broke the meld with the Union and asked.
“Elders, are you ok, how do you feel?” Asked Hanna in concern.
“My God Hanna,” Nala exclaimed in excitement. “what have you done to us? I see, feel, and understand more than I ever could."
With a wave of her hand, Hanna created a large mirror for the Elders to look at themselves. In total shock at what stared back at them, not one of them could speak, just staring at what the mirror revealed.
“I have never experienced anything like this, look at us, we are young again, the energy flowing through my body writhes to get out. How is this possible?” Razmusin exclaimed in happiness.
“That is not the only thing Elder Razmusin, I view the Universe in a new light, observing events in real-time.” Gasped Haydrienne in wonder.
“It’s as if we are reborn, you have used your strength to uplift us with energy and technology combined into this equation. Our understanding of the technology fusion with your energy has opened our minds to possibilities that are not considered possible.” Stated Vitrioss in wonder.
“One step at a time Elder Vitrioss, explore and learn, this gift is still unfolding within you and with time, comes understanding,” Hanna said with a smile.
“If you have any questions or require help, please don’t hesitate to ask.”
“Hanna, we understand your words, we do need to explore what we have received, to familiarise ourselves with this new strength we possess, to use it with restraint.” Replied Nala.
“We have located a Solar System within our Milky Way Galaxy that we believe can be Terraformed to your needs if required, it will not be your original home, nonetheless we will create a new home for you. You will be able to work, should you wish, play, have fun, and start a family if that is your desire, bring in workers to build a new Utopia, of course this Council will pay for everything. Hanna thoughtfully announced.
“And…” watching their personal Tailor push a hover trolley in front of her, “we have designed new attire for your perusal. If you wish to make changes, inform Pamela of those changes and she will do it for you.” Pamela distributed the clothing to the Elders in the hope they liked what she had created.
“The gown itself is made of Silk from Earth, while the undergarments are made from Merino Wool, native to the Earth. Pamela stated, “If you wish we can make these garments from any available material you want.” Pamela stated in thought.
“I am sure your choice of material will suit us just fine.” Replied Razmusin with a smile.
“Thank you, Pamela, we will notify you of any changes.” Bowing Pamela left.
“Elders, please try on your garments, and see if they fit you correctly.” Stated Hanna.
After showering the Elders tried on their garments, ecstatic with the way the clothing fit their bodies, and how the feel of the Merino wool-made undergarments felt against their skin.
“How do we look?” Cried Quillin in wonder.
The Council looking at the transformation of the Ancients stared in wonder.
“Exquisite.” Was all Hanna could say, the array of colours produced from the light reflecting off the silken gowns was dazzling to the eyes.
The Federation in heated debate, with at least a 50/50 split argued amongst themselves, Ryslani, growing disheartened with every passing hour, called the Council to order. She had heard enough for today and decided to adjourn the meeting till tomorrow, the hour being late in the evening. She fully expected a repeat of today's chaos to dominate tomorrow's meeting unless something changed. While on the way home, she decided to make contact with a UEF Union Member, a species just 11 light years away, called the Kallamarrin.
Ryslani knew this could cause immense problems for her but she was determined to face whatever was thrown her way. Once reaching home, she contacted her Superiors asking them to contact the Kallamarrins to pass a message to the UEF Union Council requesting their presence at Federation Council Headquarters for tomorrow at 10 am. 15 minutes later she received the reply she was waiting for, confirmation.
The next day brought the same issues facing the Galactic Federation Council with anarchy raising its voice in unison, At 9.59 am a Security Officer entered the Chambers at a brisk pace, announcing to Ryslani,
“It’s the Humans Councillor Ryslani, they request a meeting with you personally.” Replied the Security Officer.
A chorus of uproar sounded in her ears, broadcasting their opposition to such a meeting taking place on Council grounds. Ryslani motioned for quiet then waiting until she could be heard continued.
“I will meet with the Humans…” More shouting erupted, slamming her palm onto the podium eliciting instant silence continued, “I will meet with the Humans as requested.” Stated Ryslani in defiance.
“Your safety Councillor is… “ Stated the Council Security Officer, cut off in mid-sentence, “Escort the Human delegation to my personal Chambers, I will speak with them there.” With a bow, the Security Officer left the Chambers.
“Councillor Ryslani, you jeopardise your safety by meeting them on your own, at least take a Guard with you.” Turning to look at Haru’El she simply stated,
“Your words are,… comforting Councillor, however, I doubt their intentions mean me bodily harm of any sort, in fact I believe they mean no harm at all.” Stated Ryslani with conviction in her voice. She took her leave of the stuffy Chambers with haste in her steps. As she entered her Chambers the most exquisite sight greeted her, motioning the Guards to leave, they hesitated until she stared at them with hard eyes.
The Guards departed, then she observed the most beautiful beings she had ever seen, exquisite in dress and posture.
“I….. I am pleased to meet you Elders, I pray my subterfuge…… “
Hanna, waiving her hand produced a pulse of energy that surrounded them, she motioned for Ryslani to continue.
“I pray my subterfuge deployed over my fellow Councillors has not incurred your ire honoured ones.” looking around her in surprise.
“Of course not Councillor Ryslani, though we are confused about why you take this course of action.” Stated Nala.
“I grow weary of the never-ending bickering that goes on day to day, no one able to agree on a plan that will work in our favour. I am tired and ask for your help.
“I am Councillor Hanna Wilke, my colleagues are Elders Razmusin, Haydrienne, and Nala, what is it you require?” Asked Hanna.
“The Galactic Federation leans towards a war with you, I have advocated for a peaceful approach. I have tried to tell them of your superior technology over the Federation, they talk of filling the void with fleets of ships.”
“Do you now understand why we declined the Federation request for our Technology Councillor Ryslani?” Asked Hanna.
“I do Honoured One, with great power comes great responsibility, which is missing from our psyche. We do terrible things without thinking of the consequences involved with those decisions. We are not worthy.” Stated Ryslani in dejection.
Razmusin stared long and hard at Ryslani before deciding to help her. He was satisfied with her demeanour portraying an understanding of wisdom and truth.
“We will speak with your Council, imparting our wisdom on them. Stated Razmusin.
Walking beside Ryslani Hanna decided to allow the Elders to speak for them, she would only step in if things got out of hand. Observing how they handle this situation would allow for more freedom to stretch their legs. As the Guards opened the door to the Council Chamber, Hanna could feel Steeley eyes searching them out, then the shock of seeing the iridescent colours of Elder Razmusin, not knowing his species, in contrast with the other members of the UEF. Ryslani walked to her podium and spoke to her Council.
Raising her hand for silence, “I have asked the UEF Union for their help and, in turn, wished to speak with us. Councillors, I give you Elder Razmusin.”
“Councillors of the Galactic Federation, We are the Ancients spoken of or written about in text scattered throughout this Universe.” A chorus of gasps broke out in the Chambers leading to whispers of disbelief.
“My name is Elder Razmusin, my Species is the Galatians. This is Elder Haydrienne, pointing to Haydrienne to identify her, one of many Precursors and this is Elder Nala. Of course, you all know Councillor Hanna. Hanna nodded to a chorus of murmuring across the Chambers.
While Hanna listened to the speech, Razmusin explained his history, of the creation of wonderous Technologies still in existence today. Then introducing Haydrienne, she also went through her history up to now. Finally, Nala spoke.
“Where to start,” a small amount of laughter echoed from the back of the Chamber. My name is Elder Nala, I am a Kraxys, and I am 33,016 years old. The oldest….” Laughter breaks out everywhere with shouts of lies and disbelief. Holding her hand up until the Chambers became quiet, she continued.
“I am the oldest Kraxys still living, I was…. Taken when I was just 16 years old and have lived with the Precursors ever since.” Ignoring the jeers and snide remarks Nala continued. Relating how she coped with the stress of never seeing her family again to many other stories she retold and finally stepping down from the podium to cheers and claps.
Ryslani dispersed the Council for lunch leading her party to the Cafeteria.
“I am sorry for the disrespect shown you by my Council Elders.” Ryslani sighed.
“We took no offense Ryslani, we understand the nature we face.” Sighed Nala.
“I think your Council just needs to be pointed in the right direction, on Earth, there used to be a competition, the Dog Trials. It was the penultimate struggle between dogs and sheep, anyway, the point was to take sheep from one little yard, release them, and drive them into another little yard not far away, unlock the gate, usher the sheep into the yard, and lock them in. Sheep can be stubborn and will fight to go elsewhere except where the Shepherd is trying to push them. ” Commented Hanna, then continued.
“People are just the same as sheep, no matter what species they are, that same stubbornness exists once they reach the point of no return. As I explained earlier, sheep can be stubborn as all hell, it is the skill of the shepherd and his dog that will make or break the standoff. The whole point of the trials is to complete the time trial the fastest. One contestant and his dog can have a bad day trying to complete the trial, while another can do it in less than 5 minutes. That is the nature of sheep, and so it is with people.”
Ryslani and her guests consumed their lunch and then headed back to the Chambers, consumed in her thoughts Ryslani blurted out,
“Where do we begin?”
“Allow them to speak their minds, their frustrations, and if possible, their goals for the Federation. Only then you can form a plan, your leadership choices, and the pros and cons of either direction.“ Hanna stated as the door to the Chambers opened.
For the next three days, heated exchanges clashed with Ryslani having to step in to cool tempers, noticing Ryslani’s growing distress, Nala took over her role temporarily relieving her. Nala’s soothing voice and wisdom slowly won the Council over, for every suggested action, Nala explained its flaws and why it would not benefit the Federation. Seeing her for what she brought to the bargaining table, the Federation Council listened more than shouted demands. After a week of negotiation, the Council made its decision, they rejected the UEF motion to join them.
“Your decision is yours to make, there is only one direction left, and that is to improve your own technology.” Shouts of, give us your technology, followed by shouts of, you limit our growth ringing in her ears, Nala raised her hand for silence, then continued.
“You knew from your last engagement with us we would refuse that request, with great power comes great responsibility, none of which is presented here.”
Acknowledging Haru’El as he stood, complained,
“What makes you think you are better than us huh? Who are you to look down on us?” Complained Haru’El in disgust.
Looking around the Council Members and then back to Haru’El, she asked,
“I am 33,016 years old, do you not think I speak from experience, from the wisdom I have inherited from that experience, to speak in your Council Chambers, to allow my words spoken in faith, for you to twist as arrogance? I have observed for millennia species like yours tear down creativity with iniquities, smash the building blocks of knowledge with fear of the unknown, diminish other people's visions with your self imposed limitations?” Nala, taking a deep breath continued.
“We never impose on others what we cannot achieve ourselves, we do not allow others to place their limitation onto us, that is who we are Councillors.”
The whole of the Council Chambers sat in silence digesting the stinging rebuke from Nala. Looking to see if anyone wanted to reply, Nala noticed a mammalian Councillor’s raised hand and motioned for him to speak.
“Your words are wise Elder Nala, how do you propose we proceed?” Marinca asked. Haru’El glaring, was ignored.
In thought, Nala looked at Hanna, who nodded giving her the go-ahead.
“We are prepared to help you if you accept our proposition. A Peace Treaty between us, binding in every sense of those words. If you accept, we will send a Negotiation team to hammer out an agreement, once the treaty is signed, then we commence with teaching you how to upgrade your existing Technologies.”
As Nala stepped down from the podium to a chorus of cheers and clapping, Razmusin whispered to Hanna, “She is good, really good.” Nodding in agreement, Hanna wore a huge smile.
Hanna proceeded to speak with Ryslani whispering,
“we will leave you to discuss our proposal, inform us of your decision.”
Nodding, Ryslani turned and spoke to her Council.
“Our honoured Guests are about to leave, they will return when we have made a decision.”
Turning to face the Union Council, Ryslani began to clap, immediately joined by her whole Council standing to their feet, Hanna and her team bowed and then walked out of the Chamber. Ryslani knew deep in her heart, that she must stay and guide this argumentative war-prone Federation of species on a path started by the Union Councillors. Although her heart was set on leaving the Federation, for some reason she changed her mind. Perhaps there was hope… perhaps.
On the 16th of July 2317 14.26 pm, the first of the Guardian Class Starships exited the Construction Space Dock at Uriah 3 under its own power, ahead lay months of testing, crews fully testing every system with its own set of criteria, then retesting again and again. weapon testing drills, fire drills, and emergency drills daily till crews were prolific in their fields. Maneuverability testing to its maximum in any given scenario.
With a sleek and beautiful design gleaming in the light of Uriah’s Star, the Dock droids performed the last installations of its Insignia, Class number, and running lights. The Guardian Class Starship UEFGN 01 Hercules, ID Number A2-24.10-2317-SN-01 was Commissioned on the 24th of November 2317 at 10 am in a ceremony performed aboard the ship followed by the passing of a key by General George Slater to Captain Trevor Rankin, a symbolic transfer of power.
Commander Lacey Stirling stood on the threshold saluting to Captain Rankin who was waiting for her.
“Permission to come aboard Captain.”
“Permission granted Commander” he replied with a smile.
“Welcome to my humble abode Lacey, it's been a while.”
“Sure has Sir, I last saw you aboard the Heron, a shame that bucket of bolts is no more.” Shaking hands with Trevor, they both let out a laugh.
“You know where to find your quarters Commander?” asked Trevor.
“Yes Sir.” Replied Lacey. “This ship is a far cry from my last posting.” Stated Lacey.
“Oh? What ship were you serving on?”
“The Dreadnought Huron Sir, as soon as I heard the rumour you were the Captain of this Starship, I put in for a transfer and Captain Rice accepted.”
“Ahh, Captain Matthew Rice, yes I know him well. A bit of a womanizer, so I hear.”
“Uh-huh, don’t remind me, he is someone I’d rather forget.”
“Carry on Commander Stirling, get settled in then report to the bridge at 07.00 am tomorrow morning. Oh and change out of your Uniform Commander, go to the Uniform Issue outlet corridor 2 floor 4, and submit a requisition for a new set of clothing. Produce your ID and Rank insignia, allow yourself to be scanned for security reasons, and you will receive 5 sets of new Armoured Uniforms.” Both saluting Trevor turned away with a chuckle.
Wow, thought Lacey, new Uniforms, and Armoured, what the hell had she got herself into? Lacey took a lift to the 4th floor spent a little time searching for the 2nd Corridor, entered the cubbyhole, filled out the requisition form then pushed it into the slot provided. A synthetic voice made an announcement to produce her ID and Rank Insignia, then scanned her from head to toe finally verifying her ID, waiting just a few seconds, a new set of clothing appeared from a lower slot. Lacey looked at the top clothing in wonder, she saw her picture with the Rank insignia and name blazoned underneath. Once she returned to her quarters, she tried the Armour on, surprised in the knowledge her clothing had technology built in.
The Armour fitted her like a glove, showing her form in a nice way, not too revealing.
At 06.55 am the next day, Lacey rode the lift to the bridge, stepping out of the lift to an announcement of her arrival, by the night watch crew. Saluting she asked for a report. Told nothing out of the ordinary was detected, she dismissed the night watch as the day crew arrived. She watched the incoming crews log into their stations and then announced,
“Captain on the Bridge” as Trevor stepped out of the lift. With a smart salute to the Captain, everyone took to their stations.
“Good morning everyone” A chorus of good morning from the bridge crew rang in his ears, he ordered comms to open a ship-wide communications.
“Today in just a few minutes, we take our first steps, we are about to pick up special people, the reason this Starship was built for. With the Hercules Sister Ships still being built, we are the first to take on its specialists, The Guardians of the Galaxy. As many of you are finding out for the first time what our cargo is, it is of utmost importance this cargo be kept TOP SECRET until deemed otherwise by the powers that be. Therefore all communications outside this ship are prohibited except by my authority only. Our A.I. Thor will erect a damping field around the whole ship when we commence our Tour of Duty. Captain Rankin out!”
“Commander, take us out” ordered Trevor.
Lacey asked the Docking Station for permission to disembark, receiving permission, ordered the release of the docking clamps, then ordered Helm to slow reverse until clear of the docks. Then turned to Trevor and asked,
“Course Captain?”
“Set course for the Planet Rajul”
“Yes Sir, Helm, set course for Rajul”
“Course… set Commander” reported Lieutenant Rassan.
“Captain?” nodding to Trevor who nodded back at her with a gesture to continue,
“Engage FTL” ordered Lacey.
With a slight turn, the Hercules jumped into FTL.
Lacey marvelled at how smoothly the Hercules travelled through FTL, and the technology built into this Starship worked seamlessly. Taking a stroll around the bridge she took note of the data displayed on every terminal she examined, stopping at the Helm terminal, she announced,
“3 minutes to destination, Captain” stated Lacey.
“Very well Commander, Helm, drop us out of FTL as soon as we arrive” ordered Trevor.
Dropping out of FTL over Rajul, Lacey took note of how beautiful the Planet looked. Everything here had been transformed using Terraforming Technologies, The Sea water was transported from Earth in Super Tankers which unloaded their cargo into a large rocky depression in the planet's surface which caused natural weather patterns to form. Not only did this planet benefit from Earth's plentiful supply of sea water, but so did many other planets that were undergoing terraforming. Dropping the Earth's Sea level by a staggering 6 feet meant many Islands were saved from Sea inundation.
The Union Ruling Council stipulated a further minimal 20 feet drop in Sea levels was achievable within the next few years through Terraformed Planets being prepared for Ocean creation efforts on those planets. Lacey thought about how fast the development of their Civilisation was growing, what she dreamed of as a child, had already been achieved within her lifetime.
“Commander, assemble an away team to meet with Colonel Frank Partridge on the surface, to arrange their transfer as soon as possible.” Ordered Trevor.
“Sir, incoming transmission from Colonel Partridge” stated the Coms Officer.
“Ok, on screen.”
“Captain Rankin, we are ready for transport” stated Frank.
“Commander Stirling, belay my last order, Colonel Partridge, please make yourselves available to Security once your transport is complete, I will meet you there Colonel.”
“Understood Captain, Colonel Partridge out.”
“Take care of transport Commander, you have the Conn” Ordered Trevor.
“Yes Sir, Transporter Room, transport the Colonel and his team when ready.”
“Transporter Room here Commander Stirling, message understood.
Seating herself on the Captain's chair, Lacey knew it couldn’t get any better than this, in charge of one of the most powerful Starships in the Union Fleet, she felt goosebumps up and down her body.
“Commander Stirling, set course for Silas, Sector 1, using FTL until otherwise notified” ordered Trevor.
“Sir?”
“Colonel Partridge and myself have a lot to discuss before we reach our home base Commander” stated Trevor.
“Understood Captain” replied Lacey
“Helm, you heard the Captain, set course for Silas” ordered Lacey. Jumping into FTL, Lacey ordered the cloak to be activated.
“Helm, ETA to our destination? Asked Lacey.
“7 days 5 hours 44 minutes Commander” replied Lieutenant Conti.
Lacey spent her time checking tactical data feeds and System data for anything out of the ordinary, finding none, she walked around the bridge chatting with her crew members, relieving crew due their breaks, and finally taking her own break once the last one returned to their station.
“I’m taking my break, Commander Korinek, you have the Conn”
“Yes Sir” replied Joni
Walking to the lift, Lacey felt a twinge of hunger, her stomach started to rumble, she quickened her pace. Stepping into the Cafeteria, a beautiful aroma wafted up her nostrils, food she thought out loud. Grabbing a couple of her favourite sandwiches and a coffee, made a beeline for an empty stall, lifting her sandwich to her mouth, she was interrupted by a request to join her. Looking up she noticed the insignia, a Guardian.
“Sure, join me” replied Lacey.
“Hi, I’m Stacey” Reaching across the table offering her hand.
Grabbing her hand Lacey replied,
“I’m Lacey,”
With a chuckle, they both smiled at each other. Hitting it off instantly, their friendship grew, they talked about each others interests in mutual respect for their achievements they gained, when asked what she thought of the Colonel, she told Stacey she hasn’t seen him let alone met him, nearing the end of her break, they parted vowing to meet again. Lacey was feeling good as she made her way back to the bridge, knowing she would be called once she stepped onto the bridge.
“Commander on the Bridge” stated Joni.
“Report Commander Korinek’ ordered Lacey. Joni said there was nothing to report for now, thanking her, Lacey sat in the Captains chair.
Have you had your break yet Commander Korinek?” asked Lacey. Joni nodded in acknowledgment.
Commander Joni Korinek Second Class, one of the Hercules Security Officers was one of the many transfers, interviewed and accepted by the Captain.
“Commander, incoming Communications from the Dreadnought Mastadon,” stated the coms Officer.
“Put it through Lieutenant.”
The Visage of Admiral Jong Ho appeared on the viewer screen. Snapping a smart salute, Lacey continued.
“Admiral Jong, nice to see you Sir. How can we help?” asked Stacey.
“Commander Stirling, so this is where you ended up, Matthew is an idiot to let you go, however Trevor has gained an excellent Commander.”
“Thank you Admiral, do you need something?
“Commander, rendezvous with the Mastadon at these coordinates, I am coming aboard to meet with Colonel Partridge and Captain Rankin.
“Yes Sir, Coms, plot a course to these coordinates” ordered Lacey. “ETA 2 minutes Commander” replied the Helms Officer.
“See you there Admiral” stated Lacey
“Very well Commander, Admiral Jong out.”
Changing course, the Hercules dropped out of FTL beside the Mastadon, decloaking, Admiral Jong beamed aboard. Then both ships cloaked again, sitting in space. Something was going on especially with the Admiral aboard, knowing full well this had nothing to do with her.
The vote was unanimous, they accepted the proposal, now just the negotiations remained. Knowing very well they needed the Unions help to develop new technologies to grow their floundering Economy. Haru’El expressed concern at losing their autonomy, their unique way of life, while other’s proposed outrageous suggestions, none of which was inducive of a Peace Treaty Pact.
“I have studied Human History extensively over the years, they were once like us, actually worse than our darkest thoughts put together. Two Global World Wars almost fought back to back with a handful of years between each. Yet they overcame their lust for power, for destruction, for war, recognising their failures to the point of annihilation. Stepping back from the brink, they built what they are today, a peaceful gentle species, a Union of species who believe as they do, crafting a greater vision for themselves.” Ryslani continued,
“They are barbaric you say, fiends, untrustworthy, why? What have they physically done to us, or our property that warrants this kind of thinking? Their intention is not to dominate, but to share the Universe. We live in an infinite Universe, we are neighbours, We can do more than just tolerate each other, did you ever think of just helping, without consequences attached to your feigned offer? Or does your help come with strings attached?”
“Let us be honest with ourselves, what do you expect from this Treaty, are we as pure as they are? Do we have any right to demand? If this Council is what I think it is, I will resign and forge my own destiny. I am sick and tired of this Councils, as the Humans would say, Bull Shit, you want to poison everything that is good for our growth. Stand up and be counted, or leave this to the Elders. I am heading to my office, inform me when you sort your shit out!”
Shouting as she left the Chamber, Ryslani was in a rage and needed to go somewhere quiet. On the other hand the Council sat in a state of shock at the harsh rebuke from their leader. ‘Standing to his feet, Haru’El took to the podium. Staring at every Councillor, he announced,
“High Councillor Ryslani is correct, as hard as it is to admit, she is right. We must not lose her, she is the driving force behind everything we do, what say you?”
A chorus of agreement echoed through the Chamber, as the noise died down, he spoke again.
“I will inform Councillor Ryslani of our trust in her.” Stated Haru’El.
Walking out of the Chamber to cheers, they knew where he was going. Meanwhile, Ryslani sipped her ice coffee with her feet up, enjoying the peace she felt. She had made up her mind, if they rejected the Union proposal outright, she was gone. A knock at the door interrupted her train of thought.
“Councillor Ryslani, Councillor Haru’El wishes to speak with you.” Exclaimed the Guard.
“Enter” she replied, dropping her feet to the floor.
Bowing, Haru’El began by asking forgiveness for their unruly behaviour, the things they spoke of.
“Please sit Councillor,” waiting till he was seated continued.
“It is not you Haru, or the Council, it is me. When I was young, growing up in poverty was all I knew, yet we were happy. As we grew, we helped out with the farm as best we could, our parent's sacrifices we appreciated, but knew wore them down. Since then I have dreamed of a better life, without poverty, without prejudice, leading to the situation we find ourselves in. I believe with all my heart, if we accept, with no special conditions, we will achieve what we have always reached for, the trade sector will overflow. Elder Nala told me we were not worthy, perhaps in time, just perhaps they’ll have a change of heart, who knows, anything is possible.” Haru'El spoke with a smile,
“Then let us, together, walk the path to our future, if that future leads to the Humans, then so be it.” They shook hands, a Human gesture, then continued chatting about anything and everything, enjoying the peace and tranquillity, yes, sipping on iced coffee.
The Galactic Federation Council, sat in utter silence, waiting for Haru’El to return hopefully with great news, the longer Haru’El was away, the worst they felt. Then the Chamber door swung open to reveal Haru’El followed by Ryslani, a huge cheer, then clapping as they both stepped to the podium.
Haru’El Spoke first. “Councillors, after much talking, we have decided to accept the Union Union proposal without conditions.” A murmur of approval greeted his announcement.
“We both believe this decision is the right decision to make for our future, let us put aside our differences, our trust in the Union is paramount for the growth of the Federation.” Stepping back to clapping echoing through the Chamber, Ryslani walked to the podium and waited patiently for the clapping to stop. This was an entirely different Council to the one she walked out on and it pleased her. Finally after a full minute the clapping stopped then she spoke.
“For many years this Council has been my home away from home, sure we have had our differences, there have been many times I just wanted to get out and leave. I believe you have turned the page to a better future for us all, we must make this treaty work for us, I know we can do it, together. My faith in this Council has been restored, let us all follow the path laid for us together.” Smiling, she stepped back from the podium to cheers and clapping.
Ryslani sent a personal message to Hanna, instantly receiving a message back asking if she was in her personal Chambers, to which she said yes, then she read the next message that said for her to stand by.
Ryslani received an incoming communication request from….
“Councillor Hanna?” Exclaimed Ryslani.
“Sorry to give you a shock Councillor Ryslani, our network spans the Stars.” Explained Hanna.
“Honoured Elders, I was surprised for a moment. On behalf of our Council, I wish to notify you of our decision, we accept with no conditions attached.” Stated Ryslani.
“You wont regret this Councillor, this Treaty will benefit both our peoples.” Nala stated in confidence. “We will send our Negotiation Team in 3 days time to work out the little details like currency exchange, that sort of detail. Every aspect of our Treaty negotiated to our mutual benefit.”
“Thank you Honoured Ones.” Replied Ryslani with emotion bubbling out of her.
Three days later negotiations were hectic but productive, the sticking point was the currency the Federation used. The fundamental difference was the security built into the credit chips of the Union to stop illegal counterfeits from ruining the economy. Then a breakthrough occurred, the Union would mint new Federation Credits at a small cost.
Speaking with the Union Council, Ryslani was informed of all the support infrastructures required to tie everything together, The Union would build that infrastructure support before beginning the minting process, while the Union Technology Specialists Team taught their team how the upgrade process worked.
Ryslani was overwhelmed with information, but knew this was a necessary process they had to go through. After every detail had been agreed to, a signing of the Treaty date was confirmed, the 1st of January 2318, broadcast everywhere simultaneously. The Union had minted a batch of one thousand test Galactic Federation credits for testing purposes within its main Centre of Currency. Once the Science Team arrived they began installing the new Currency Counter Machines which were sealed in a solid frame built to deter tampering while the Tech Team dealt with teaching Federation Tech Teams the how to processes involved with upgrading current Technologies. The Union Trade with the Federation grew daily, Farming Utilities, clean energy generation, food production technology, Food supply, all leading to a booming Economy.
The Minting of the new Galactic Federation Credits had started in earnest after the Union created a Template which was approved by the Federation. A deal had been agreed between both parties, the cost of 1 trillion minted Federation Credits was 10 billion, or 1%, this was to help offset the cost of the inbuilt technology.
“Already your Economy recovers well, I see what you have traded with our Union, Farming machinery, definitely the best way” stated Dr Heke.
With less than a week till the signing, everything was coming together well. Even Dr Heke’s pupils he taught, soaking up the lessons learned with zeal applying that knowledge to the problem of upgrading their technology. Dr Heke’s teaching method drew praise from his pupils leading to a breakthrough.
“You have done well my students, working together to solve a problem.” Exclaimed Jake.
“Now, put that knowledge to good use.”
Excitedly the students feverishly exclaimed,
“You teacher, is the one who taught us well, we now understand.”
Dr Heke bowed to them then continued where he last left off, Visual teaching was the best way for them to learn.
Ryslani was also busy keeping note of every trade they made for accounting purposes, the Union had allowed them 20 years to pay their debt, the Union knew it would take time but also knew the Federation needed all the help they could supply. Ryslani knew their debt would be very large but also noticed the Economy grew exponentially as their Federation invested in their future.
None of this made sense, what the Union had done in two weeks, the Federation failed to do in years. If they carried on this way, in no time, they would be back on their feet
For 6 hours the Hercules and the Mastadon sat motionless in space while something big took place aboard the Hercules. There was speculation going around but Lacey put her foot down when it came to rumours.
“Commander, do you know when the signing of the Peace Treaty with the Federation takes place” asked Lou.
“Umm… about a week away, why do you ask Lieutenant?”
‘There’s a lot of hype about it making it’s way round the ship, this is a good thing for the Union, we don’t have to keep watching our backs.” Explained Lou.
“I highly doubt if they would ever try anything, they have tried twice before, one of their Councillors spent time in our Penal Colony for two years” a chuckle broke out on the bridge.
“Commander, I’m receiving a Communication request from the Milhaven” reported Lou.
“Put it through Lieutenant.”
Dr …Heke, how can I help?” asked Lacey.
Commander … Stirling,” looking at her name plate, “I have been ordered by the Council to beam aboard the Hercules” replied Jake.
Checking her forwarded messages, she came across the Order from the Council.
“Verified Doctor, request granted, I will meet you in the Transporter Room.”
“Commander Korinek, you have the Conn.”
“Sir.” Replied Joni.
Lacey met with Jake at the Teleporter then instructed him to follow Security who would take him to his destination, the Captain and his meeting.
“Captain Rankin here, Commander Stirling, resume our course, FTL speed” ordered Trevor.
“Sir” replied Lacey. “Helm resume our original course.” Ordered Lacey.
Using a secure link to the Milhaven, Lacey sent the Coordinates, ready for activation by the Milhaven Helms Officer, jumped into FTL, heading for the Guardian Base of Operations.
“Sir ETA 2 days 4 hours 30 minutes” Asha frowned.
“Captain Rankin must have ordered FTL speed, carry on Lieutenant.” Ordered Ninshe. Asha mused to herself, this was turning into a nightmare.
