EARTHS FIRST STEPS
Chapter 1
Episode 1
By Peter TM
The year is 2079, humanity, a hodgepodge mix of peoples on different continents, have finally unified as one people, one rule system. It took years to negotiate staggering amounts of hurdles facing negotiation teams, through hard work and the skill of team members, Russia finally capitulated to pressure from the International Negotiation team forming a united front. No more borders no passports to produce but run by a Council of twelve elected by every person of age to vote.By studying the crashed spacecraft at Area 51. The vast amount of data collected by the United States Government, with input from scientific specialists recruited from all over the world to transform the enormous amount of data into a working prototype of technology and clean energy generation techniques. Damage to the spacecraft was extensive and the engine was beyond repair due to the use of exotic materials unknown to humanity.
Then in late 2102 humanity created its very first hybrid FTL drive derived from the blue prints created from the crashed alien ship.. Since then, technological advancements, alien weapons, and shield integration, with the development of an advanced FTL engine have driven humanity forward in leaps and bounds.
Earth's development of Quantum Entanglement Technology brought with it instant communication anywhere, the development and construction of Relay Communication Buoys strategically placed throughout the Solar System and beyond to eradicate lag delay over vast distances. Through this technology, Humanity discovered they were not alone in the stars, leading to the building defence systems and Fleets of ships in urgency. It was simple maths, from the thousands of signals they detected, a minimum of 20% were potentially an enemy.
For almost twenty years Earth had been quietly building its defence grid and fleet in quiet determination. With advanced FTL drives, transporting ships and mining crews to the Kuiper belt took days instead of years. Mining on a vast scale had transport ships traveling 24/7 every day for materials that were needed for the huge task ahead of them.
The UEFN New Horizon prepared for their historic jump with unbridled enthusiasm, if this worked, humanity would not just travel the stars, but the universe itself would open doors for man in ways unimagined. With excitement building
Captain Marc Lazarus could not wait to get underway. Marc had done many FTL jumps before but this was entirely different The United Earth Federation Council (UEFC or UEF for short) had voted to go ahead with the test under strict operational rules that had to be fulfilled before activation. The Kuiper Belt was the destination to test their new Space Folding drive. The main FTL drive, the backup in case the new engine failed, with an excited look at her Captain,
“Countdown in 15 minutes, Captain” First Officer Commander Angela Forrester announced.
“Very well,” Marc replied. I want everything checked again and double-checked. Nothing must be left to chance; our lives could depend on our thoroughness.”
“Sir!” replied the bridge crew. With a flurry, crew fingers flew over computer terminals with unerring accuracy, checking and rechecking settings. Captain Marc Lazarus activated his comms on his chair.
“Doctors, are you ready?” asked Marc.
“We have completed our checks on the engine and software settings Captain, we are ready here.” Replied Doctor Arlene Montoya.
Doctor Jake Heke from New Zealand, a brilliant physicist smiled with uncertainty,
“Here goes nothing” With fingers flying over his console, Jake pressed the power button and the engine hummed to life.
“Ready for activation Captain.” Replied Jake.
“Thank you Dr Heke”
Captain Marc Lazarus activated his ship wide comms,
“Attention New Horizon, we are about to activate the fold drive for the first time, if everything goes well, we’ll be at the Kuiper Belt in mere seconds, prepare for the ride of our lives.”
Marc nodded to his first officer.
“Course set, activating in 3, 2, 1…” Standing at the Quantum Fold terminal, Angela activated the engine.
The ship seemed to dip as space folded around it, the next moment the New Horizon hurtled through space and reappeared mere seconds later at its destination coordinates.
Momentarily disoriented, Marc whispered to himself. “My god, oh my god! Status Commander,” he inquired.
Commander Angela Forrester was lost in wonder for a moment, then reality kicked in…, Fingers flying over her terminal,…
“No damage reported Captain, and… we have reached our destination,”
“Lieutenant Lassiter, open a channel to the UEFC, we need to report our success to the council.”
A moment later…
“Contact established. Captain.” Communications Officer Lieutenant Barrie Lassiter reported.
“On screen Lieutenant.” Replied Marc.
Straightening his uniform Marc greeted Hanna Wilke.
“Greetings Prime Councillor and esteemed Council members”
With a nod from the council members, Marc continued.
“We have completed our mission with a successful jump to the Kuiper Belt, the Quantum Engine worked perfectly.”
A chorus of cheers echoed throughout the Council Chambers.
“Well done Captain Lazarus, well done, you and your crew have made history today.”
Hanna turned to Doctors Arlene Montoya and Jake Heke with a smile on her face.
“And well done to the both of you, I knew you would not fail us.”
“Thank you Prime Councillor, we are collecting all the data from the test jump, we will have a full report for the Council as soon as we’ve had time to look at the data.” Arlene's heart was still pounding hard from the jump just minutes ago.
“Good. I will see you all when you return to Earth.”
Earth celebrated the successful test mission with enthusiasm in every city, every home, anywhere they could dancing and drinking the night away.
THE SIGNAL
As the years rolled by, humanity's quantum theory knowledge had advanced leading to the development of planetary faze-shifting quantum entangled shielding technologies, teleportation, personal teleport and shield technology being developed for Earth's defence forces, and advanced A.I adaptation technology is still in development, and earth scientists working hard to develope this new technology regime.
Transport ships carrying materials from the outer rims would come and go 24 hours a day to build humanity's very first Dyson Sphere around a star five hundred light years away, which would take years to complete. Humanities mining operations were on an unprecedented scale. The materials gathered were not only for the construction of their very first Dysons Sphere but also to build its space fleet. Earth sent Communication Probes spaced every one thousand light years, as they deployed, they faze shifted and cloaked undetectable to everyone. Earth’s Communications Network spanned two other Galaxies where Humanities interest lay, including Galactic Federation Territory.
Then just three months ago, Earth’s Defensive Technology detected signals coming from another Galaxy, coherent and translated by Earth quantum technology, a species calling itself the Killikix, an insectoid species at war with a species called the Kraxys, who looked like a game character from Earth, the Evoker, without the wings.
Councillor Dawn Haldane: “What do we do Councillors?” The Council room was hushed as everyone looked at each other.
Prime Councillor Hanna Wilke: “According to Earth Scientists, they appear to be primitive in terms of technology. Doctor Heke, welcome, you have the floor.”
Rising from his seat in the isle, Dr Jake Heke stepped up to the podium.
Dr Jake Heke: “Prime Councillor, esteemed members of the Council, we have determined these two species have been at war for two earth years with millions of deaths on both sides.” As Jake took a deep breath, the Council gasped in awe and shock, he continued..
Dr Jake Heke: “Their technology is centuries if not thousands of years behind us.”
Prime Councillor Hanna Wilke: “Do we watch them destroy each other, do we intervene, or do we just ignore what we have discovered?”
An uproar erupted from the Council Chambers with Councillors debating for and against any form of intervention. From the back of the room, a young woman stood to her feet waiting to be recognised.
“Order!” yelled the Prime Councillor over the din of noise, gradually the din subsided into absolute silence.
“Young one,” Hanna looked at the young woman with interest. “Step forward to the podium and state who you are.”
Walking forward to the podium, Arona turned to the Council members..,
Arona Lazarus: “My name is Lieutenant Arona Lazarus,” murmurs of recognition of her surname.
“Any relation to Admiral Marc Lazarus?” asked Councillor Haldane.
Arona nodded: “He is my father.” She replied with pride in her voice. Councillors nodded with respect.
“I am currently serving aboard the UEFN Dreadnaught Mastadon as one of its Science Officers and part of a negotiation team created to deal with situations such as this one.” Arona looked around the Council Chamber trying to gauge the mood, taking a deep breath she continued.
“We have the capacity and determination to negotiate a ceasefire from the ashes of a devasting war that has killed millions on both sides, the least we can do is try.”
“And if negotiations fail? What makes you think we can negotiate any deal between alien species?” Asked Councillor Rhyjin. Arona looked uncomfortably at the Councillor.
“Councillor Rhyjin I understand your skepticism, really I do, but I believe our negotiation team can bring about change between two species at war, Humanity must try. Surely this is better than allowing one or both to erase each other from the Galaxy? Should this happen, we, as a species, and the Galaxy would be lonelier for the loss.” She paused letting her words sink in she continued.
“For centuries we have looked to the stars wondering if we were alone. then we discovered we were not alone, I know we can help them but if we do nothing, just sit back and watch them destroy each other, how do we live with ourselves?”
The Council Chambers was deathly quiet. Taking a deep breath she continued..
“We have an opportunity to uplift ourselves, better ourselves as a race, to uplift those in need, to interject between warring species and negotiate peace, yes even on a galactic scale.”
“Now that we have discovered life an opportunity exists for relations between what must be a myriad of species, not just in our galaxy, but eventually all galaxies with sentient life." She paused for effect, looked at Council members and said, "Thank you for listening esteemed council.”
With an exhaled breath she stepped off the podium to clapping from everyone in the Chamber. As the din quietened Hal stepped to the podium and mused..
“Lieutenant Lazarus, you have given us so much to think about, to ponder, and to discuss and we thank you for your input today."
Then a screen came into view in the center of the chambers, Admirals Marc Lazarus and Angela appeared on the screen.
“Esteemed members of the UEF Council, we stand before you in support of Lieutenant Arona Lazarus in this endeavour. We must pool our resources and help these two species, to do nothing would be a great loss to humanity and the galaxy as a whole. We cannot afford to just sit back, to watch them annihilate each other, let us show them a different path, a path to peace.” Turning to his daughter he said..,
“Congratulations Arona, your mother and I listened to your speech and we are proud of you.”
“Thank you, Admirals.” Then, Arona said, “Thank you, Mum and Dad.”
With tears in her eyes, the screen blinked off as she returned to her seat. Arona hadn’t seen her parents for over a year missing them terribly. Arona and her twin Jason joined the Space Défense Force at the same time and after graduation were assigned to different ships. Jason, a comms officer aboard the UEFN Tyranos, and Arona assigned to the UEFN Mastadon.
First Contact
A flurry of activity was everywhere as preparations for their journey were made. The UEFN Mastadon loaded supplies in enormous amounts with medical units in the mix to help both factions. As military forces and crew boarded the ship. Arona couldn’t help but think of the wonders they would discover and perhaps new technologies discovered along the way.
The UEFN Mastadon was 8km long, 5km wide, and 2.5km high, the standard for all Earth-built dreadnoughts while Earths Super Carriers were enormous, 22km long 7km wide, and 6km high however, no Super Carriers would be on this journey, just one Dreadnought would make the journey. As the Mastadon left Earth orbit, the planet celebrated its journey with joy and a tinge of sadness in their hearts, not knowing when they would return.
“Admiral Jong, we are about to clear the orbit of Pluto.” Captain Hiroshi Ito notified him. “Course input completed sir, awaiting your order.”
“Very well Captain,…. Engage!” The ship surged forward as the fold drive fully engaged warping space around her, in seconds reappearing in the targeted Galaxy where the signal originated. As the Mastadon dropped out of folded space Captain Hiroshi ordered security to cloak the Mastadon seamlessly hiding the ship from any prying eyes.
“Engage FTL!” ordered the Captain.
“ETA?” asked Ho
Ito replied, “13 minutes Sir.”
“Enough time for a coffee? Ho looked at Ito.
“Sorry Sir, I had coffee before we left Earth Orbit.” Saluting the Admiral, Ito turned back to the view screen.
As the Mastadon entered the Concorde Solar System Captain Hiroshi ordered the helm to drop to sub-light speed.
As Admiral Jong exited the bridge lift, Ito snapped a salute to the Admiral and said,
“ETA 2 minutes Admiral.”
“Very well, nice and slow.”
The Mastadon slowly entered the planet's atmosphere and descended to five thousand meters.
“Helm, all stop!” As the ship slid to a halt, a shocking view of the battle unfolded before their eyes.
“We need data, what started this war, grievances, etc etc. Lieutenant Lazarus, see what your team can find out, discreetly."
A week went by with huge amounts of data collected and categorized for easier understanding. After many meetings with the crews, they were ready for talks with the two parties, but how to get them both to come to the negotiation table. After much deliberation, Ho decided to just announce their arrival to the warring parties and ask for a cease-fire to be enforced on both sides. Ho hoped this sudden revelation would shock both species into negotiating terms for a permanent cease-fire leading to the cessation of hostilities.
“Comms, tap into their communications array”
“Tap is active Captain” replied Arona.
“All yours Admiral,” Ito stated.
“This broadcast is a message to the Killikix and the Kraxys, I am Admiral Jong Ho of Earth, we come in peace, and wish to negotiate a cease-fire between both warring parties with the intention of negotiating a cessation of all hostilities.”
As the crew of the Mastadon watched, confused warriors on both sides were unsure what to do, looking around to see who had broadcast the message. Communications on both sides were in chaos then, Commander Alak’or spoke into his coms..
“Where are you Erther and how do you know our language?”
“Our technology is broadcasting simultaneously on all frequencies, translated two-way communications so we, and your enemy can understand what we are talking about.”
There was a long pause for what seemed like hours waiting for a reply, then, Alak’or, unsure how to respond simply said..
“I am not in a position to negotiate anything at this time, I will inform Command and await their decision, do not call me, I will call you.”
Then a call came in from the Kraxys.
“I am General Zabor of the Kraxys, I have spoken with our command about your offer. We are willing to discuss terms of ending this war."
“We are so happy you feel this way General Zabor, I’m sure our negotiation team will be able to broker a treaty agreeable to both sides.” Replied Ho with a smile.
“We are tired of this war, we are tired, hungry and it has cost us millions of my people's lives and counting, I look forward to our talks when they happen.
“We will do our best for both sides of this conflict, we will hammer out a truce where everyone is happy. Thank you Fabor for sharing with us.” Replied Ho with a smile.
“What do you think Admiral, do you think Alak’or will negotiate?” asked Ito.
“Unsure my friend but we shall see.” Replied Ho with conviction. “If he is unwilling to sit at the negotiation table, then we pay a visit to his commanders.”
Meanwhile at the Killikix base camp,
“Find them! Discover where they’re hiding.” Fumed Alak’or
“Commander, we are unable to locate the Erther anywhere, we even have ships checking our moons and planets.” Slamming his pincer on the table, Alak’or stormed out of the tent.
It has been six hours since Admiral Jong Ho spoke to the Killikix representative Alak’or who was starting to lose his patience with him, it appeared Alak’or was unwilling to negotiate a peace deal of any kind. Ho reflects on everything so far, Fabor had expressed an interest in accepting a peace deal, their people sick of the war, while Alak’or appeared to favour a war footing. Ho decided to bypass Alak’or and go over his head, the constant stalling of the Killikix Commander wore him down, time for action.
The Negotiations
“Lieutenant Lazarus, do we know where the Killikix base is?” Ho would not wait any longer
“Yes sir we do.”
Good, connect us, we’re going round Commander Alak’or.”
After a little while, Arona turned to the Admiral..
“Connection Established sir.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant.” Ho activated his coms. “Killikix Command, I am Admiral Jong Ho of the Earth vessel UEFN Mastadon, we wish to speak with you, please reply.” After a short while, the speakers crackled and the view screen activated.
“I am General Zic’lor, we have never heard of your kind, what do you want with us?”
Ho took a deep breath and replied.. “We are here to try and broker a peace treaty between your race and the Kraxys.” A long pause ensued then,
“Send your negotiation team and we’ll talk”
“Thank you, General, you won't regret this.”
After three weeks of negotiating and still no breakthrough, the negotiation team was frustrated but determined to succeed. The following few days were hectic for the team, for every obstacle they climbed, two more took its place. Progress was slow, with a herculean effort, the team made the breakthrough, and the war was over.
Commander Alak’or was at the celebration, scowling at Admiral Jong,
“Where is your damn ship Erther? Where are you hiding?”
“Don’t worry, we will reveal our ship's whereabouts when we leave, you’ll be very surprised when you see it.”
With a smirk on his face, he walked away from the disgruntled General. Alak’or walked briskly over to his General complaining bitterly, not able to find the Mastadon, he felt humiliated. His frustration was evident on his face, Ho walked over to the human and Kraxys contingent and forgot all about the General.
General Fabor and Ho spoke at length about the problem with their dying planet, the conversation became in-depth so Ho offered Earth's help. Fabor accepted the offer with skepticism all over his face.
“Don’t worry my friend, as long as your planet meets certain criteria, we have the technology to do the impossible.”
Taking a breath he continued…
“We will send our people to terraform your planet.”
It was the following day and time to head home to Earth, With the treaty signed, Alak’or walked over. “Erther you promised to reveal where your ship is hiding.”
“Commander Alak’or, our technology is centuries if not thousands of years ahead of yours, Captain, please reveal the Mastadon.”
The shock on Alak’or and his people's faces as the Mastadon revealed itself put a smile on all the human faces.
“I told you, Commander, you’d be surprised. We are Humans or Humanity, thank you for having us, and making our trip a success, see you ........... out there.”
As Ho and his team teleported to the Mastadon, more shock on the faces of the Killikix, laughter could be heard from the humans as they teleported to their ship.
