The Glory of Science Fiction
Science Fiction movies have the most ingenious way to bring out our wildest dreams, our thoughts seem to come to life in front of our eyes. When I first saw "Star Wars" I was amazed and was always wondering, "how did they do that?" Watching the big screen at our local picture theatre, ships buzzing here and there, thrilling as hell! In those days, like me, many young people dreamed of being better than what they were, and of course, I was not different to any of them. The excited chatter after the movie finished, the loud boisterous shouting to parents "I wanna see it again!" Ahh the memories, wishing and hoping...
Myself, being the eldest of thirteen siblings, of which three passed away very young, and last year lost the second eldest brother due to cancer, I guess you could say I was a dreamer, what does this have to do with Science fiction? In my mind's eye most of what I see today is Science on a grand scale, come true. Watching and listening to people talking about Science Fiction movies and what Science Fiction represents, putting their own spin on what it looks like to them. Listening to most of them from Reddit talk about how boring, or how bad movies are, even calling some actors as “hussies”, I guess people of the modern era have had it so good for so long that they forget where they came from.
Science fiction is an innovation of creativity, the creation of prototype technology that does not exist yet, except in the minds of great thinkers and doers yet to be born, or those on the brink of a breakthrough technological leap that propels humanity into an unknown future of terror and excitement. people are very short-sighted and have not learned anything from our collective history, let alone their own. Think about it for a moment, history is full of so-called science fiction events, someone who invented something that was so amazing to everyone else of that time, can we call that science fiction? Of course we can, though some would have called it a God, or an Evil spirit of some kind, the thought blows the mind.
If it wasn’t for the invention of the wheel, well, your guess is as good as mine, if someone didn’t invent the television, well your guess is as good as mine, if someone didn’t invent the first vehicle, or the airplane, well, your guess is as good as mine, Captain James T Kirk and the flip-phone, history, and innovation are so entwined they compliment each other so well many miss the event entirely. I say to those people who "sit on the fence" or instantaneously travel through indignation and rage, this is not the end, but a beautiful bright future for us all. Who are we to stomp on someone else's dream?
Technology has advanced to the point we dazzle ourselves with our own inventive theoretical processes, for greater innovative discoveries to achieve a goal out of reach, and are willing to create it using the technology of the day to portray in fictional movies what we cannot delve into in reality. The endless possibilities that are still "yet to be invented" I believe are not a pipe dream of those few who are doers, but are tomorrow's innovations yet to be born. Humanity must keep striving for greater heights, with technology and the sciences as the fruit of our collective loins, let us not stagnate our future selves, but as Captain Picard would say, "boldly go where no man has gone before!"
